The Statement of Purpose is a tricky thing. It’s one of the most important things on your resume, but also one of the hardest to write! It’s often the first thing that employers, admissions officers, and scholarship committees see about you — and the wrong impression can be the end of your chances.

So, how do you get a good SO? What should you write about? Do you need to make it long? Short? Funny? Serious? What if you don’t know what you want to do? What if you don’t know how to write it?

When you’re applying to grad school, your statement of purpose, or SOP, is your one chance to make a memorable first impression on your readers. Unfortunately, SOP is not only an intimidating process, but it can also be confusing — especially with so many different pieces of advice floating around out there.

If you’re applying to grad school, you’ve probably read that your SOP should be 1–2 pages long, no more than two pages, or that you should use the “inverted pyramid” approach, or that you should have an index, or that you should have a bibliography.

Each of these pieces of advice is probably valid for some applications. But for most applications, you should be asking yourself: “whose SOP is it anyway?”
