Prescription medications are made to prevent disease. However, all prescribed medications have some side effects. After reading the article, you will be clear about: “Can prescription drugs cause hallucinations?” When an individual uses a prescription drug after consulting with a doctor, however, they are addicted to that medication, and some side effects appear, among them, one rare side effect is hallucination. In this side effect, the victim thinks he is seeing, hearing, and feeling something that does not exist. Prescription drug addiction occurs when an individual misuses their prescribed drug, uses another prescription drug, or uses it to get high and it’s recovery possible only in a prescription drug rehab center.

Hallucinations

Hallucination happens when the brain produces experiences even though nothing is actually there. Such as visualising something, hearing something, or hearing voices, music, or feeling sensations on the body without anything. People often think that hallucination is a symptom of mental illness, but it can also happen because of medicines, drug use and lack of sleep.

Sometimes it happens because of prescription drugs. When an individual uses their prescription drug excessively, it leads to prescription drug addiction, and hallucinations may start after addiction develops.

How Can Prescription Drugs Cause Hallucinations?

Dopamine and serotonin are chemicals in our brain that help brain thinking and perception. When someone takes medications excessively, then those medications affect brain chemicals or change the level of brain chemicals. When these chemicals change the brain, it suddenly doesn’t process correctly, and the brain starts creating some false stimuli, which is called hallucinations.

Some factors can increase the risk, including:

  1. High medication doses

  2. Using multiple medications at the same time

  3. Kidney not working properly, which affects drug metabolism

  4. Elderly patients

Types of Prescription Drugs Linked to Hallucinations

1.Opioids

Oxycodone and morphine are opioid medications. These medications occasionally produce hallucinations, such as dreams and confusion, when someone takes high doses of these medications. It especially happens when an elderly patient takes it.

2. Sleep Medications

Sleep medications are used to make you fall asleep, but when an individual misuses that medication, it leads to hallucinations. When someone takes more of this medication, it creates a disturbance in the brain and makes some hallucinatory images appear, and hear things that do not exist.

3.Stimulants

Stimulants like caffeine help to increase energy and focus. When someone takes excessive caffeine, their chemicals are imbalanced and can cause hallucinations. Dopamine and Norepinephrine are chemicals in our brain that increase activity and cause us to see things that are not there after taking an overdose of stimulant drugs.

4.Benzodiazepine

Benzodiazepines are used to treat anxiety and insomnia, but when an individual misuses this medication, they can become a victim of hallucination.

Conclusion

Prescription drugs are used to treat various health conditions, but sometimes overdosing causes hallucinations. After reading the above article, you can understand the symptoms of hallucinations, which help an individual to start their treatment in the early phase and not become a victim of prescription drug addiction.
