I ended up getting a storage unit after a very unplanned apartment move in Al Barsha. My new place was smaller than it looked in the photos, and for about 8 months half my life was either in boxes or in the way. I was skeptical at first because I thought storage was only for people relocating overseas, but honestly it saved my sanity.
For long-term use in Dubai, I think it makes sense if you are paying a silly amount for extra space at home. I compared the cost against moving to a bigger flat and the unit was still cheaper. The main thing is being realistic about what you are storing. I put in winter clothes, books, old kitchen stuff, and a bike I was not using every week. I did not put in anything I knew I would need every few days, because then it becomes annoying fast.

A few things I learned the hard way:
* Check access hours properly, not just the headline ad.
* Ask about humidity and how the place is cooled.
* Pack like you will forget what is inside after 6 months.
* Do not keep important documents in random boxes.
If you are in Dubai for the long run but move areas a lot, storage can be a good middle-ground. A lot of us bounce between Marina, JVC, Barsha, and wherever the rent makes sense that year. My honest opinion: long-term storage is worth it only if you treat it like a tool, not a dumping ground. If you are storing furniture you do not even like, sell it. If it is stuff you genuinely want to keep but do not need daily, then yes, it can be a very practical Dubai expense.
