I recently had a five-hour layover and wondered whether it was worth leaving the airport. After looking into it, I found that the answer depends on a few things, like immigration rules, how far the airport is from the city, and how long it takes to get back through security.
If your bags are checked through to your final destination and you don't need a visa to enter the country, a short trip outside can be a great way to stretch your legs, grab some local food, or explore a nearby area. Just be realistic about your timing. For an international flight, it's usually best to be back at the airport at least two hours before departure.
I also recommend checking can you leave the airport during a domestic layove and keeping an eye on your flight in case the schedule changes. If the airport is far from the city or security lines are known to be long, staying inside might be the smarter choice.
Has anyone here left the airport during a five-hour layover? I'd love to hear where you went, whether it was worth it, and any tips you have for making the most of a short stop.
